 Dictionary. An easily searchable version of the American Heritage Dictionary, complete with full dictionary definitions, usages, roots, word origins, synonyms, other forms, etc. Most words also come with audio so students can hear the correct pronunciation.

 Thesaurus. This online version of Roget's II: The New Thesaurus provides an easy-to-use synonym hunter.

 Encyclopedia. The sixth edition (2001) of the Columbia Encyclopedia is a great first stop for any research. Each entry includes links to important related areas.

 Almanac. A basic almanac from FactMonster.

Specialized Almanacs. More than 100 specialized almanacs from the worlds of public affairs, science, sports and entertainment, from InfoPlease.

 World Factbook. The U.S. government's geographical handbook offers profiles of each country in the world.

 World Atlas. From MapQuest.

 Thesaurus. This online version of Roget's II: The New Thesaurus is a handy tool for finding that perfect work for your writing assignment.

 Dictionary. The American Heritage Dictionary.

 Spelling and Grammar. Rules and tips on spelling and grammar from FactMonster. A variety of other spelling and grammar helpers have been compiled by the Ellington (Conn.) Middle School.

 Research Papers, Book Reports and Essays. Outlines and tips on the different writing forms from Infoplease.

 Writing Rules. William Strunk's classic book The Elements of Style details the rules of great writing.

 Famous Quotations. The writer can search for a famous quote or saying by author, keyword or partial quote. The Bartleby's site searches three sources simultaneously - Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, Simpson's Contemporary Quotations and the Columbia World of Quotations.

 Draft Outline. The "Concept Web" generator from Teach-nology allows students to create a basic outline around the 5Ws - Who, What, When, Where, How and Why.

 Illustrating Reports. With more than 10,000 photos, graphics and other clip art. And more clip art from DiscoverySchool.

 Create Word Puzzles. This DiscoverySchool.com site allows the creation of crossword puzzles, missing words, cryptograms and other word puzzles.  Getting Published. Creative Kids, the nation's largest magazine written by children, publishes stories, poems, cartoons, photos and games by students 8 to 14. Other magazines and Web sites available to elementary and middle school writers who want to get publish their short stories, essays or poems published include Kidnews, Kidpub, Stone Soup, Word Dance, Writers' Slate and Potato Hill Poetry. Homework Helper was created by Christopher Callahan, associate dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland who specializes in uses of the Internet. Homework Helper is designed to help middle school and upper-level elementary school students, and their parents, with nightly homework as well as long-term research projects.
