Three more national news writing awards were won Thursday by Gazette reporter Eric Eyre.

The Education Writers Association gave Eyre an investigative writing prize for his disclosure that Kanawha County pupils were bused to movie theaters to watch cartoons, supposedly as educational field trips. His award is a second place for newspapers under 100,000 circulation.

The EWA also granted him a special citation for his revelation that school gifted programs admit few black students. And another special citation was awarded for his coverage of the suspension of a Sissonville High School girl who opposed U.S. military action in Afghanistan.

Since joining the Gazette staff in 1998, Eyre has won seven awards in the EWA's annual contest. He is a native of Broad Axe, Pa.
